Fasting, Bulletproof Coffee & Everything In Between
π₯ You Don’t Need Intermittent Fasting to Do Keto
Let’s start with the truth:
You don’t need to force intentional fasting when you’re on keto.
That’s not the goal and it’s definitely not required.
Keto naturally creates longer gaps between meals because real, satisfying meals keep you full for hours.
Most people on keto eat:
- One meal a day (OMAD)
- Or two meals, naturally spread out
- Without trying to “fast” β simply because they aren’t hungry
Personally, I eat every 24β27 hours (sometimes even more), not because of disciplineβ¦
but because I’m genuinely not hungry.
π½οΈ Why Are You Not Hungry?
Keto meals, when built correctly contain:
- Protein
- Healthy fats
- Minimal carbs
This combination:
β stabilizes blood sugar
β removes cravings
β creates long-lasting satiety
So the “fasting” everyone talks about?
It’s actually just the normal gap between properly built meals.
β³ Intentional Fasting on Keto Works Differently
If you are intentionally fasting, it’s always personal:
- Goals
- Health conditions
- Lifestyle
- Hormones
- Stress levels
But here’s an important rule:
π If you’re hungry before 8β12 hours after a meal β the meal wasn’t built correctly.
It was either:
- Too low in fat
- Too low in protein
- Too many carbs
- Or simply not satisfying enough
Fix the plate β fix the hunger.
β What Actually Breaks a Fast? (The Debate Nobody Ends)
This is where people fight in Facebook groups π
There are two approaches:
Approach #1: “Fat doesn’t break a fast.”
People who follow this say:
- Bone broth is fine
- Butter coffee is fine
- Heavy cream is fine
- Anything with fat “doesn’t raise insulin”
So it “doesn’t count”. This is often called “lazy keto” or “dirty keto.”
My approach (and the approach backed by physiology):
Anything with calories β even pure fat β breaks a fast.
Why?
- It still activates digestion
- It still signals energy intake
- It still stops cellular repair
- And yes β your body recognizes calories as food
If the goal of fasting is autophagy, cell repair, metabolic cleanup, or fat burning β then fat absolutely breaks a fast.
β οΈ Why Are You Drinking Bulletproof Coffee?
This is the big question. Ask yourself:
Are you drinking it because you’re hungry β or because it’s tasty?
If it’s hunger β
Your previous meal was not built correctly.
Re-check your protein + fat ratio.
If it’s taste β
Then you’re reinforcing old habits of “snacks”, “treats”, “little extras.”
This goes against the entire purpose of keto:
breaking emotional eating patterns and building real satiety.
π§ Keto Is About Real Hunger β Not Substitutions
When the meal is satisfying, fatty enough, and protein-rich β you shouldn’t be craving five coffees with butter, bone broth, and “just a little something.”
That’s diet behavior β not keto behavior.
β Summary
- Keto naturally creates long gaps between meals without forcing fasting.
- If you’re hungry too soon, the plate wasn’t built correctly.
- Anything with calories breaks a fast, even fat.
- Bulletproof coffee and bone broth count as food.
- Always ask: Am I hungry or am I just keeping old habits alive?
- The goal: real satiety + new habits = metabolic healing.
